TRAVELS WITH A SCHOLAR
7 DWARFS COURTESY OF KIRT KEMPTER AND GEOMOSAICS
KASHA-KATUWE NATIONAL MONUMENT AND THE COCHITI DAM
DR. JOSEPH HENRY SUINA AND DR. KIRT KEMPTER
THURSDAY, MAY 22, 2025
Join Southwest Seminars on Thursday May 22 for a day with Dr. Joesph Suina as we learn about two important places located on the homeland of Cochiti Pueblo. Kasha-Katuwe holds great natural beauty and also a place of significance to Pueblo de Cochiti. It was designated a National Monument in 2001. Man-made Cochiti Dam, authorized by Congress in the 1960s as a means to control the periodic flooding of the Rio Grande, flooded sacred lands as well as fields the tribe had tended for centuries. Learn the positive and negative effects these two features, one nature-made and one man-made, have had on the people and the Pueblo of Cochiti. Learn about the shared history and the ongoing relationships with the Tribal government, the BLM and the Army Corps of Engineers.
With local geologist and vulcanologist Dr. Kirt Kempter we will explore the geologic history of the National Monument at the southeastern base of the Jemez Mountain including a three-mile hike (round trip) along the Canyon Trail, providing spectacular views of slot canyons, tent structures, and culminating with a broad vista of the surrounding area. Participants will appreciate the volcanic history of Bearhead Volcano, active ~7 million years ago and responsible for many of the unique deposits now sculpted by erosion in the Tent Rocks area. The trail has many narrow passages on irregular terrain, climbing 700 feet in elevation.
Dr. Suina is former Governor of Cochiti Pueblo and has served on the Tribal Council as Professor Emeritus, College of Education, UNM and as former director Institute for American Indian Education for tribes throughout the Southwest. Dr. Suina is also devoted to farming, family and Cochiti tribal council service. Dr. Kempter is a volcanologist, field geologist and with extensive field research in Costa Rica, Mexico and New Mexico, including field geologic training for NASA astronaut training program candidates.
Includes Village admission, honorariums for study leaders, picnic lunch and donation to the Keres Children Language Center (KCLC) at Cochiti Pueblo which teaches Cochiti youth subjects in their native language. $225 PP
