THURSDAY, JULY 18, 2024

Join Southwest Seminars on July 18 for a day with master potter Russell Sanchez of San Ildefonso Pueblo for a unique opportunity to witness a traditional firing, a tour of his extraordinary art collection in his home and studio, a Pueblo-style family feast meal and a historic walk-around of this renowned Pueblo village of arts and artists.

Russell has received numerous awards including the 2022 Best of Pottery and Best of Show at the Santa Fe Indian Market and the prestigious New Mexico Governor’s Award in 2017.  His work is displayed at the Denver Art Museum, the Heard Museum, the Millicent Rogers Museum, the Museum of Indian Art and Culture, the Museum of Natural History in Los Angeles, and the National Museum of the American Indian (Smithsonian). His pottery has also been published in numerous magazines and books, including The Art of ClayTalking with the ClayGenerations, Changing Hands, and Spoken Through Clay. He is dedicated to the living tradition of giving recognition of the potters of the past.

The historic village, nestled beneath Tunyo (Black Mesa) and the east bank of the Rio Grande has been settled for over 700 years when its ancestors from the Mesa Verde region moved into and onto the Pajarito Plateau. Consisting of nearly 40,000 acres the population is approximately 750 tribal members who maintain traditions, songs, ceremonies, and a sense of pride in their past, present, and future. The community is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

We will be joined by the current San Ildefonso Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, Dr. Bruce Bernstein, formerly Pojoaque Pueblo Tribal Historic Preservation Officer and former Executive Director, Southwestern Association of Indian Arts; former Director and Chief Curator, New Mexico Museum of Indian Arts Culture/Lab of Anthropology; and Assistant Director for Collections Research, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian and Author, Santa Fe Indian Market: A History of Native Arts and the Marketplace.

Includes: Village admission, honorarium for Russell, his family of helpers for the firing and cooking, a traditional feast meal and the tour of the village.  $195 pp
