THE GALISTEO BASIN & CERRILLOS HILLS WITH DR. KIRT KEMPTER
THURSDAY, MARCH 19
Join Southwest Seminars and Dr. Kirt Kempter for a one-day tour exploring the geology of the Galisteo Basin, including the Cerrillos Hills. Carpooling from Santa Fe our loop will take us south to the town of Eldorado, then dropping down into Galisteo Basin. Weather permitting, an easy 2-mile hike is possible at the Galisteo Basin Preserve. We will then travel through the village of Galisteo before heading west to the Cerrillos Hills. After a few important geologic stops near Cerrillos we will take Waldo Canyon Road to I-25 before heading back to Santa Fe. Many important geologic sites and events will be discussed as we traverse this landscape, including the volcanic history of the Cerrillos Hills and Ortiz Mountains, the preservation of abundant petrified trees, the onset of rifting in the Santa Fe area, and how the geology of the Galisteo Basin impacts oil, gas, and water in the area. Tuition includes Study Leader honorarium and picnic lunch. $175 pp.
